What do you make of the game Free Play that Ender plays in chapter 6? Ender advances in the game but once again aligns himself with his brother Peter at the end of the chapter. Do you think being put in these situations strengthens or torments Ender?

The Turn of the Screw

The siblings in “The Turn of the Screw” might remind us of Wendy and Peter in “The Veldt.” Their appearances are greatly emphasized and they are mysterious children. Do you think Flora and Miles have any role in the strange things that have occurred?

Subsoil reaction

“Subsoil” by Nicholson Baker was a surprising and humorous read. What I found most ironic was that Nyle T. Milner, the agricultural historian, had such a great fear of potatoes. The reference to Mr. Potato Head reminded me of my childhood and childhood fears in general. I never had a fear of potatoes but I was afraid of zombies after the video game Resident Evil came out.  The end of the story, in my opinion, was very dark. The next man to open the box was going to suffer the same fate as Nyle. I do wonder what will become of Potato-Nyle after the next man turns into a potato.

Digital Nation

Watching the Frontline documentary Digital Nation, a particular quotation came to mind: “Those who criticize our generation forget who raised it.” While I could not find the author’s name or time period that it was written in, I find that it reflects how many young people would feel watching Digital Nation. In the segment titled “The Dumbest Generation?” Marc Prensky brought up a good point. Prensky said, “The reason a lot of people are stuck, I think, is because they confuse the old ways, the best ways of doing something once with the best ways of doing those things forever.” As technology evolves, so do our ways of doing things. Digital media is an incredible tool that solely depends on how a person uses it. If a Queens College student is reading up on breaking news via CNN’s Twitter page as opposed to listening to the radio for the latest updates, then more power to them.

fantasy, phantasy, n.

3. b. A day-dream arising from conscious or unconscious wishes or attitudes.

This definition of the word fantasy reminds me of what I wrote in our first in-class writing. I associate fantasy with day dreaming and thoughts in our minds of wishes and desires that we may have. A fantasy can range from anything that can occur in our immediate environment to something imagined in a far away galaxy. This definition of fantasy leads me to wonder about the themes we will be exploring this semester. Will we be dealing with whimsical characters and events that cannot be found in history books or that cannot be supported with factual evidence?
